01

Decide what you need the location to do

A location may be a customer market, an operating base, the owner’s home or a workplace for part of the team. Those functions need not be in the same country. Define which one needs to change and why before combining business requirements with personal preferences.

Give a family move its own criteria. A business expansion may not require the owner to relocate at all. When both are involved, examine who moves, who leads the remaining operation and which everyday arrangements the family needs. Include the current location in the comparison.

  • Which function needs another location, and what problem would that solve?
  • Does the owner need to move, or is that a separate preference?
  • What is worth preserving in the present setup?
02

Distinguish essential conditions from preferences

Identify conditions the plan cannot work without: permission for the activity, access to customers, effective management, residence rights or a school place. Treat each unresolved condition as a question to verify. Attractive lifestyle or costs cannot compensate for a requirement the plan cannot meet.

Then compare the trade-offs: travel, communication, the working environment, provider availability and ongoing costs. Consider adapting the current operation, using a partner or establishing a limited presence as well as a full relocation.

  • Which conditions would rule out an option if they cannot be met?
  • Which preferences are genuinely negotiable?
  • Could a partner, branch or limited presence achieve the purpose without a full move?
03

Compare like with like and keep unknowns visible

Ask the same operating questions of every location: who manages, where work is delivered and how payments are handled. Identify initial and recurring commitments. For the people moving, confirm residence, work, housing, healthcare and school requirements with the responsible institutions and advisers.

Record each criterion, the evidence available, the unresolved question and who will verify it. An unknown should remain visible even when the rest of the option is attractive. Explain material trade-offs in words; an overall score can conceal a condition that rules the option out.

  • Are you comparing equivalent operating functions in each place?
  • Which material facts have not yet been verified?
  • Who is responsible for checking each condition before commitment?
04

Test the choice against ordinary life

Illustrative scenario, not a client case: an owner-led business is considering another operating base, while the family wants to keep its current school arrangements. The company comparison looks promising, but local leadership and the practicalities of living between two places remain unresolved.

The owner can test the market, assess local management and compare residence requirements before committing to a household move. A limited business presence may also achieve the objective. Any interim arrangement needs defined authority, capacity and handover; a reserve location needs a realistic maintenance budget.

  • What changes if the family and business move at different times?
  • Which responsibilities must be covered during a transition?
  • What reversible preparation would help before a binding commitment?
05

Choose the next step and when to review it

Bring together the purpose, essential conditions, leadership, personal needs, costs and open specialist questions. Record why you would proceed, defer or stay. Set a review point based on a business milestone, a family need or verified information that changes the choice.

Global Success Consulting helps compare the options and lead separately commissioned practical work. Qualified advisers assess legal and tax matters; banks and authorities retain their decisions. Request a 60-minute first consultation at EUR 950 to examine your location choice. We agree the scope, issue an invoice and arrange the appointment after payment is received.

  • Can you explain why the chosen route fits better than staying?
  • Which unresolved condition should pause the commitment?
  • When—and on what evidence—will you review the choice?

A useful comparison explains the trade-offs and the conditions still to resolve. The next step may be a move, a limited presence, further preparation or staying.
